8 Things to Ask Your Makeup Artist

Know before you go! Here are some questions to ask a makeup artist you're considering for your wedding day.

Denise Elliott Beauty Co.

How much is it to book you? Are there any other fees beside this one I have to pay?

This is definitely the first thing you should ask your makeup artist. You’ll likely have a set cost for how much you want to spend on your bridal beauty look, and if their pricing goes over your spending limit, it’s best you know that right off the bat. You should also inquire about travel fees and how much the deposit is if you’re required to pay one.

Do you also do hair?

Some makeup artists also include hairstyling as part of their services. It’s smart to ask this earlier in your consultation so that you can just hire one vendor to create your entire look for the day, versus hiring two separate beauticians. This will likely end up saving you money as well.

Do you do bridal parties?

Find out if you can hire your makeup artist to do all of your bridesmaids and how much more it will cost you to treat your best girlfriends.

Will it just be you doing my makeup or will you bring a team with you?

Some makeup artists work solo, while others may belong to a larger studio. It’s important that you find out if the person who does your trial will also be doing your makeup on the wedding day. If they are bringing a team to do your bridesmaids, make sure you ask to have your trial artist reserved just for you.

Are there certain products you use on every bride?

Do they always do air-brushing? Are they a stickler for applying false lashes to all of their brides? Is there a specific kind of foundation swear by? It’s important you know about their usual beauty regimen for brides before booking. Find out how flexible they are in adjusting their routine.

Do you use products with SPF, oil, etc.?

If you have any allergies to certain ingredients in makeup products, make your makeup artist aware before you begin your trial so you don’t break out on your wedding day. If you know you need SPF in your foundation to avoid a major sunburn, this is also the time to let your makeup artist know.

May I see photos of past brides?

Ask them for their portfolio or search the web for past weddings they’ve done. It’s important you see the final outcome of brides the artist has done in the past. This will help you know what their general makeup style is and if the artist can provide you with the look you want.

What’s your makeup style?

Is their goal to enhance a bride’s natural beauty or to make them especially stand out on their wedding day? It’s important that you and your makeup artist have a similar vision for the day.
