Thoroughly disappointed
Our caterers, Belle et gourmande, were on time on the day of the wedding and generally responsive in their communications. Unfortunately, several significant issues arose that impacted our experience and our wedding day.
Throughout the planning process, much of the written communication appeared templated and automated in tone. In our opinion, this contributed to misunderstandings. Based on our experience, it did not always seem that the commitments being made in writing were fully understood, which later led to discrepancies between what was confirmed by email and what was ultimately delivered.
Prior to the wedding, we communicated extensively by email about accommodations for guests with severe allergies and dietary restrictions. After the contract was signed, Belle et gourmande confirmed in writing that they would prepare separate plates for these guests, as this situation was not specifically addressed in the contract. On the wedding day, these accommodations were not provided. When we raised this concern, we were told that this was not included in the contract, despite the written confirmation we had received by email afterward. This was extremely disappointing, particularly given the seriousness of food allergies.
We had also discussed and agreed upon a Christmas-themed wedding with specific colour guidelines. While most elements aligned with this, the deviled eggs served were bright blue and dark purple. When asked, the caterers explained this was a mistake during the dyeing process. Unfortunately, guests commented that this looked unappetizing, which detracted from the overall presentation.
When concerns were raised on the day of the wedding regarding dietary accommodations and service issues, Belle et gourmande was not receptive to feedback. Interactions with my mother and our wedding coordinator became tense and confrontational. At one point, our coordinator was told that she was causing undue stress that could negatively affect the caterer’s wife’s pregnancy. These exchanges escalated and resulted in arguments involving my mother, the coordinator, and myself as the bride. This significantly disrupted and overshadowed a portion of our wedding day.
In addition, wine service was poorly managed. Over half of the alcohol we had provided was never served, wine glasses were not consistently replenished, and many guests were left with empty glasses during key moments, including toasts.
Belle et gourmande had also contractually agreed to both cater and decorate the cocktail hour. This was not done as planned. We noticed during the cocktail hour and raised the issue, at which point the team attempted to put something together last minute. The result did not reflect what was agreed upon, despite the additional cost charged for this service. The cocktail hour was ultimately not decorated as promised.
After the wedding, Belle et gourmande issued a partial refund of $500. While this gesture was appreciated, given the scope of the issues and the original total cost of nearly $7,000, it did not, in our opinion, adequately reflect the impact of the shortcomings experienced.
Finally, a custom stamp we had provided for coffee cups, featuring our dog, was never returned.
This review reflects our personal experience. While some aspects were handled adequately, the lack of follow-through on written commitments, unprofessional handling of feedback, and failure to deliver contracted services made this a very disappointing experience for such an important day.
