Great venue, disappointing catering

We had our wedding this past May at Columbia Valley Community Hall and catered by Chestnut Springs.

Columbia Valley Community Hall is an excellent venue. We appreciated having the space for a full 3 days, making it easy to set up and tear down. As it includes plenty of tables and chairs, the venue can accommodate decently large weddings, and has a beautiful outdoor space. While the indoor space is a typical community centre gym, it is easily made beautiful with a little wedding decor! Cathy, the contact for the venue, was very responsive to our questions and there were no issues with access whatsoever. As long as you are happy to DIY your set up and decor, this venue is fabulous and we'd 100% recommend it.

Chestnut Springs, the caterer...

First things first, the pizza is absolutely a 5/5. Delicious flavours, fabulous crust, and so many boxes of leftovers! We and our guests were totally satisfied with the pizza.

Unfortunately what really dampened our experience was some issues with communication/clarity and some less than professional conduct:

1. This vendor leans towards verbal communication, and the contract is very bare bones. Unfortunately, this led to some last minute misunderstandings about what type of food would be provided to our guests with dietary restrictions, as well as around the pricing of additional items. This led to some very stressful moments in the last 2 weeks leading up to our wedding, which could have been avoided if there were more details provided in writing when initial agreements were reached.

2. The other communication issue was on the day of the wedding, while Chestnut Springs said they would arrive at 3pm to start set up, they did not arrive until between 4-5pm. This was due to rainy weather and them doing some advance preparations back at their property (totally understandable), but we wish this would have been communicated so our team wasn't left wondering where the caterers were.

3. The most disappointing part of our experience was the lack of professionalism that was experienced by ourselves and our guests. When discussing our guests' dietary restrictions, the vendor made derogatory comments such as suggesting that it was impossible to find food for guests with celiac disease, saying we should just tell them to "bring food from home" or feed them "hospital food". While it is perfectly fine to have boundaries around what types of restrictions your company is able/willing to accommodate, there was no reason to speak disrespectfully about folks with dietary restrictions. In addition to this, some guests reported to us that when they approached the catering staff during food service to ask questions about what was available, they were met with cold and dismissive attitudes.

The pizza was absolutely delicious, we cannot stress that enough. Unfortunately though, due to the communication and professionalism issues, we wouldn't recommend hiring this caterer for a wedding or large event.

A perfect unique wedding option

Our experience with Chestnut Springs Catering at the Columbia Valley Community Hall was above all expectations. Our guests raved about the venue and all the delicious food offerings, and it was a perfect unique option for our wedding. Would definitely recommend if you’re looking for something a little more fun than plated chicken on your big day.

Venue transformation breathtaking!

My daughter's wedding was stunning and this venue allowed for the complete package. The outdoor area was perfect to have the ceremony followed by a cocktail hour with space for lawn games and fellowship. The hall was gorgeously transformed by Brocks pipe and crushed white velvet drapery. We were 160 people and there was room to walk between tables, a podium space as well, and a first dance clearing. Chestnut Springs Catering was out of this world delicious. I still have people asking me about the pizza.
Brock was exceptional to work with! He was relaxed while being professional, accommodating, patient, and very knowledgeable. I would easily book another event with him along with this venue. This place is budget-friendly while sacrificing nothing. The only miss was the kitchen was not fully stocked as advertised with mix match dishes not suitable for a wedding. We simply rented table settings and it all looked amazing.

Father of Groom

This place was amazing - I was concerned about traffic because it was a long weekend but it was no problem. We had 170 plus people there and the outside and inside accommodations were suitable, clean and comfortable! I was impressed with the facilities and would encourage others to consider this out of the way place as it solidified the warm and welcoming atmosphere we were wanting for the wedding. Chestnut Springs provided an amazing food experience. Great experience!
