About

Located in Saint John, New Brunswick, Dufferin Hall is a curling club with a spacious banquet room excellent for wedding receptions. This historic venue was created all the way back in 1874 by fourteen members from the St. Andrew's association of curlers as their original group was not able to welcome many members. After numerous additions and some movement of the location over the years, a fire in 1975 left only the walls of the ice shed standing. Eight sheets of ice were then built and the club joined with Thistle to create a new organization.

Facilities and capacity

The fully licensed club contains a marvelous and sizable banquet room on the second level of the building. The facility comes with air-conditioning and has enough space for a comfortable one hundred and fifty to two hundred family and friends.

Services offered

Fantastic catering services are provided by the locally well-known and talented Jeremiah Jacobs Caterting. A non-catered booking is also possible from April to the end of September with the possibility to include the bar and a capacity for one hundred guests. The manager is also available to help couples plan a successful celebration.

Other services

The banquet hall can be rented for other types of special occasions such as plated luncheons, coporate parties and business meetings. Another option is to rent the ice for various types of special events or activities involving the great sport of curling.

Quick to offer help not follow through

We rented the smaller of the options for the TSA as we had plans to do an afternoon tea for the food, and renting the larger space required the use of their catering services (which does not do sandwiches and tea).

I was initially worried about the carpet and the rustic look, but with the decorations and lighting it turned out beautifully.

Initially, Mike, our contact, was very accommodating and agreed to allow us to set up on Thursday as they were supposed to be laying the ice for curling. When the time came they were doing construction, which we were not aware of. That stopped us from being able to set up on Thursday, we ended up being there much later on Friday than expected because rather than breaking it up over 2 days it had to be done in one day.

The venue was not happy with how long it took for us to set up on Friday, and the bartender was not informed that the venue was going to be closed from 3 - 5 while our helpers prepared the hall for the reception.

The sound system for the area is in a very difficult-to-access location and was difficult to work with.

It was difficult to make arrangements for the breakdown on Sunday. Originally the venue stated they would clean up, but we had a lot of items that were owned by individuals and expensive that they wanted to pick up the next day. After the arrangements were made the person that was supposed to meet us was 2 hours late. We were let in by the people doing construction upstairs.

All in all. The venue looked nicer than we expected, and the cost was within budget, but the communication and transparency were lacking.

The hall is beautiful decorated. There is ample free parking, and both the manager of the club and the caterer were amazingly helpful in terms of getting in to decorate, view the hall, and tear down our setup. Highly recommend.
