Butternut Tree - Intimate and Romantic venue for wedding

We picked the Butternut Tree Restaurant as our wedding venue (July 29 2023) and they did an amazing job!!! Their wedding planner, Samantha, was so helpful and Chef Scott Downey and his team showcasing and delivering amazing appetizers, food and drinks for our event. We had so many compliments on the venue, food and experience I would recommend them to everyone. I also liked that they were centrally located downtown, had large windows, a rustic feel and panoramic view of the Legislature Building, bridge and park. A night to remember. Thank you!!!

Amazing Hosts

My husband and I were able to have The Butternut Tree host our June wedding ceremony and reception. Samantha the event coordinator/manager was so attentive, patient, and flexible and worked hard to make our wedding vision come true. The Butternut Tree staff were amazing the night of the wedding making sure guest's glasses were full, and people were getting served on time. The Chef and the team did an incredible job with the food, it was an amazing experience. All our guests were so impressed with every single dish and the quality of the food was amazing. Guest continued to rave about the food throughout the night and into the next day.

My husband and I have deciede that every year for our anniversary we will be having dinner at The Butternut Tree. If any brides and grooms are looking for a intimate beaotiful venue, i would recommend you reach out the The Butter Nut Tree.

Perfect venue for a fall wedding

We had to plan our wedding in 7 months and the butternut tree made it super simple for us to do so. Samantha was an amazing coordinator, well organized and detail oriented. Without her services we would have been lost. The food is absolutely incredible and everyone left with nothing but amazing things to say! The location is perfect, you get views of the legislature and high level bridge. It was super easy to take photos as the river valley is right there and just made for an easy commute between venue and photos.

I would recommend anyone who is planning a wedding to check out the butternut tree first!

Amazing food, Amazing Staff, Perfect atmosphere for our special day !

The Butternut Tree was exactly what we were looking for when it came a small intimate wedding. Phenomenal food, and a beautiful location are just a couple of the amazing reasons we chose them as our venue.
The staff went above and beyond to help bring our day together with the least amount of stress as possible. The wedding manager Sam was available when we had any questions and she was able to make our vision a reality.

Amazing People, Amazing Food, Amazing Venue!

We knew we wanted a downtown Edmonton wedding venue and visited a few restaurants before The Butternut Tree. As soon as we sat down with them, we knew it was the place! The staff here are all a dream to work with - Sam, the Wedding Manager, helped us with all our questions and decisions; The seriously AMAZING servers and bar staff who made us and all our guests feel so taken care of; and amazing food created by Chef Scott and the entire kitchen team. The Butternut Tree has a lot of great things, but it really was the staff here that made our wedding day perfect.

Their prices were very reasonable - even more so when you consider what is included. We were able to adjust our menu to fit our budget and our tastes. We had a few dietary considerations among our guests and they ensured those guests received just as special a meal as everyone else. When there was an issue the day before with their sound system, Sam reassured us they would have an alternate solution ready by the next day and they did. We went with no DJ so this could have been a bigger problem than it might for others, but it worked out perfect because of their willingness to make it right.

Amazing communication before we even booked the space right up to the day after the wedding when we picked up decor. I honestly can't think of anything bad to say about hosting our wedding here! Seriously, consider them if you're looking for an Edmonton venue! We have friends who are still raving about the service, food, and attention to detail and say it was the best wedding they went too. I don't have any illusions that had much to do with my DIY decor, haha.

Beautiful, Professional, Delicious

We hosted our wedding reception at The Butternut Tree in July 2022. My vision was a small (~50 people), low key romantic bohemian wedding with amazing food and drinks. From the beginning the team at The Butternut Tree was wonderful to work with. We booked our date with ease about a year in advance, and they were always prompt with responding to my emails. On the day-of, our ceremony was at a church and started and ended late, pushing the reception later than scheduled. Samantha was an excellent communicator and ensured that the hiccup didn’t affect the smoothness of the evening.

We were able to look through the potential items for the menu in advance to discuss it with the chef. They also offer a menu tasting, which was so fun, and really put our minds at ease about anything food-related. We opted for a selection of hors d’œuvres and three choices for a three course meal. The food on the reception day was excellent, and I still get compliments from guests about the mushroom soup, the pork belly and our signature cocktails. The wine and drink service was also impeccable. I was worried that guests would be left hungry or thirsty but everyone was more than satisfied. As soon as a glass was empty, it was almost magically filled within minutes. The entire team was helpful, and seemed genuinely happy to be helping out the event. They were professional, courteous and I cannot imagine a better setting for our day.

The view is beautiful, and as we had many people from outside of the province, they got to see a picturesque view of Edmonton and got to experience local foods at their best. The restaurant photographed impeccably well and the string lights made it very dreamy. We also had kids attending, and I was skeptical about it being an appropriate location for them but wanted to allow guests traveling from far to bring their family. Their kids menu was perfect and the restaurant was small enough that parents could supervise their kids easily. We had a small dance after dessert and it worked out well, not feeling too cramped. The size of the dance floor was ideal for the guests who wanted to dance and was a great end to the evening. The reception was everything I dreamed of and the whole team at The Butternut Tree skillfully made sure of it. I would recommend them time and time again.

The Butternut Tree is a 10/10! It was an experience of a lifetime and worth every penny!

Where to even start! This location is beautiful on its own, let alone the views. They made the wedding process stress free and convenient. Jillian was quick to respond with any questions and executed our vision perfectly. They were understanding and flexible with planning, especially during covid. Chef Scott created an outstanding menu that was unforgettable. Customer service was phenomenal, all the serving staff went above and beyond and gave such attention to detail. Our guests were blown away by the entire experience. They truly made our wedding the best day ever! We can’t say enough good things about The Butternut Tree and all of their staff. Without a doubt the best venue for a wedding or any event for that matter. We would recommend them time and time again.

Best wedding experience ever

We had our wedding during COVID when some restrictions were still in place, but we hardly even noticed because the Butternut Tree team was so accommodating and did everything they could to still make it as normal and fun as possible (and we all had a blast). They decorated the venue beautifully, and the food and drinks were delicious.

We were also blown away by how they went above and beyond for our event, including ordering our cake for us, making wedding favours, and printing custom menus.

Overall, we're so glad we went with them. We would absolutely recommend them!

Simply amazing!

Jillian and Scott, as well as the rest of the staff at the butternut, are really an all star team!
From day one Jillian was always on the ball, answering all my many many emails and questions. They were so flexible during all the issues with COVID, allowing us to rebook with no problem. On the day of Jillian and the staff set up all our decor allowing us to have a stress free day. and it looked better than I could ever have imagined. She handled everything and our day ran perfectly! On top of all the our food was to die for. Chef Scott and the team knocked it out of the park and our whole family is still raving about how good it was!
Thank you all so much for the incredible day, it really wouldn’t have been possible without you and we are forever grateful!

Meet the team

Jillian Fonteyne
Jillian Fonteyne
General Manager

I was born and raised in Edmonton. Some of my earliest memories of exemplary service and hospitality stem from incredible family vacations and part-time jobs in the restaurant industry. It was these experiences that cultivated my lifelong passion for hospitality and love of travel.

I was able to translate my passion for hospitality into a career by furthering her education at NAIT and Royal Roads University. After completion of her degree in International Hotel Management, I relocated to England where I began my career at the five-star Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire.

Early in 2015, I moved to Ireland to work at the award-winning Gregans Castle Hotel as Restaurant Manager. This is where I developed a greater appreciation for food and the origin of ingredients.

Following my time in Europe, I returned home to Edmonton to continue my career in the developing food and beverage scene. Working as a manager at some of the latest downtown restaurants to emerge on the hyper-local scene in recent years, I brought exceptional leadership and experience to the (dinner) table, helping these new restaurants achieve success in the evolving Edmonton restaurant industry.

Now, I inspire the team at The Butternut Tree with my impressive knack for creating a memorable guest experience.

Chef & Owner

I grew up in St. Albert and spent my summers visiting family in New Brunswick. The memory of the butternut tree in my grandmother’s backyard is a powerful symbol of the wonderful ingredients growing all over the Canadian landscape, waiting to be rediscovered.

I haved cooked at Michelin-star restaurant Daniel in New York, the highly decorated Noma in Denmark, and Wildebeest in Vancouver. For the prestigious James Beard Foundation, I took part in the preparation a special foraged feast with Chef Eddy Leroux and forager Tama Matsuoka Wong.

With a love for Canada and its abundant bounty never far from my thoughts and heart, a return home was always in the cards. I returned to Vancouver where I founded and operated a foraging company with many fine restaurants relying on his ingredients.

Today, you can find me back in the prairies gearing up to open The Butternut Tree in the heart of Edmonton’s downtown core — a place that celebrates the art of gathering, in both fine company and ingredients.
