Got our Licence today!!

Allison, on September 12, 2019 at 15:52 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 33

Not really much to discuss, but my FH and I went down to City Hall and got our licence so we are able to get legally married now!! 37 more days until "I do" now!

For anyone in Ontario, you can download the licence application here: Ontario Marriage Licence Application. You can fill it out and then print it out to bring to City Hall/Municipal office (legal paper recommended). It took us 20 minutes or so, but we got the licence right away so we just hang onto it until the wedding. Also, cost varies from City Hall to City Hall for whatever reason (It's $10 cheaper in Thunder Bay than my hometown where we're getting married) so definitely see if it's cheaper somewhere else! As long as you get it in Ontario and are getting married in the province, it doesn't matter which City Hall/Municipal office you go to. Smiley winking

WOW! I don't get why they are different from city to city - you get the same form!

    Ours was only $125 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I had my mom's full name (including married) but they only wanted maiden, so that's another thing to look out for!

Oh yeah we filled out ours ahead of time but they made us redo it on their computer. It was stupid. How much did yours cost? Ours was $135

Yeah when we did ours we had to do everything on a computer at town hall and any date past 90 days was greyed out so you couldn't select it.

They checked our intended date on our application so I'm guessing if we were too early, they'd tell us to wait - I feel like most places would do that.

When we went to town hall to get it the first time we were early and they wouldn't let us get it. But I don't know if it's like that everywhere.

As far as I'm aware it's $100 no matter where you go Smiley smile

That’s so weird that it varies. Here in BC it’s $100, there’s a handful of London drugs’ that do them or you can see on the vital statistics website. We didn’t have to fill anything out before hand, we just took our drivers licenses into our LD and gave her some information. It took like 15 minutes.

We got ours a while ago. Just a heads up as well for anyone in Ontario you can only get it 90 days or less before your wedding.

Lol definitely not!! We're getting married in my hometown (London) and got our licence in our current city (Thunder Bay) the two cities are 18 hours away from one another lol!

So yeah! Go to Toronto or Mississauga, whatever works better for you guys! Smiley laugh

You could get it from Toronto City Hall if it worked better for you. As long as you get it in Ontario somewhere lol

Or just go to Mississauga like your original plan Smiley tongue

I don't work unfortunately where we're getting married - I work right across from Toronto City Hall but that won't help me haha.

Mississauga actually lets one person go if they have the Application with original signatures and IDs, so it's fine. I can roll it into a day where I'm off doing something else.

I honestly went on my 1/2 hour break (I get 1/2 paid lunch and 2 15 minute unpaid blocks but I can squish them together) and was back in time (I also work a block away from City Hall).

But yeah, it is annoying still, one day it'll be more streamlined but I'll be married way before that time lol

    Mississauga Licence

It looks like you can do what Casey did, do it online but both of you have to be there(?) and then bring your confirmation number and ID to pick it up or only one of you have to go with the proper ID.

Our City Hall would've allowed only one of us to be present, so long as the one party had 2 pieces of their ID and 2 of their partners (must be originals - no photocopies) and the absent party had already signed the application.

It might be different for other city halls, so I'd look it up for the one you plan on going to, they'll also list the types of ID they accept!

We just did this last week too! I wanted to get it done, because it was the one thing I kept forgetting.

It was way faster than what I had expected. We live in Niagara Falls, and right from their website I could fill out the application and submit it online. So they already had all the information and I just had to pull up the confirmation number when we walked in!

    Woohooo!!! So exciting!!!

Dumb question - do we both have to go apply? Or can I just bring his documents with me? We're never in the same place during the week so this may be difficult if we both have to be there (which I suspect we do).

Wow, it sounds easier in MB just because they have it in more places!! Does price vary from place to place there?

You can only get it at a Municipal Office, Town Hall or City Hall here in Ontario
